But full tolerance is a goal I can aim at, and a sort of criterion I can use to evaluate and improve my responses. Clearly, applying it involves a lot of sensitivity to the particular situation (and a lot of practical wisdom).

What's nice about it is that it seems to resolve the conceptual tension between moral criticism and cross-cultural respect, which had me caught in a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't way of judging myself. Hans's understanding of full tolerance offers a way of being critical without being culturally chauvinistic, and being respectful without simply accepting or disengaging from the object of one's respect.

(Unfortunately, the photo of the bubble kid is from Google, not from my camera. Hm, I probably should have said that in the post.)Duckrabbithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15100386740019274296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1034228560980652513.post-8604892218660563332008-10-31T23:23:00.000+02:002008-10-31T23:23:00.000+02:00The kid in the bubble is really cute.Do you see yo...The kid in the bubble is really cute.

Do you see yourself as "fully tolerant"? Even just in my current academic life this is true: in the last couple weeks I've written at least three response papers about issues in psychology that directly drew on stuff we learned in PhilSci and PhilMind... And more importantly, when I start thinking critically about the theoretical papers we're reading, I can very distinctly feel all the mental habits I picked up in those seminars kicking in! I think all my classmates should have minored in philosophy ^_^Synchroniahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08721451790449158051noreply@blogger.com
